Sh2- 57 and Sh2- 58 are only apparently neighboring objects. Sh2- 58
has about the same distance as the Scutum Supershell, while Sh2- 57
is much closer to us at a distance of only 5000 light years. Sh 2-57 is
ionized by the B0.5 III giant star BD -8 4623.
